Foreign wars: the privatisation of English language teaching

The Guardian ran a story yesterday on the privatisation of English language teaching in universities, particularly in English for academic purposes and foundation courses. Private sector companies such as INTO, Kaplan and Study Abroad are trying to establish a presence on campuses.
The University and Colleges Union is campaigning vigorously to keep higher education public.

Revolution by degrees

Losing our tongues

A survey by UCU, the University and Colleges Union, finds a stark decline in the number of institutions offering modern language degrees.
The number of higher education institutions in London providing undergraduate French has fallen by 27 per cent, universities providing German have dropped by more than half (58 per cent); and, according to university admissions body, UCAS, there will be no undergraduate Italian courses in Northern Ireland in 2007.
